New York Walks: The 92nd Street Y (Henry Holt Walks Series)

Great fun
Get this if you already live in NYC or intend to visit, you will not be disappointed. I loved the detailed info on the architecture of the Woolworth building and the history behind the folks in buried in Trinity Cemetary. I enjoyed the facts of who used to live in what buildings in the Village. When covering the 5-Points Section, what is now the Federal &State Courts area & Chinatown, was absolutlely fun trying to hunt down these old sites still visible for myself. All the info on the history of some of the street names was curious such as Mott, Pell, Bayard & Baxter streets were named after the butchers in the area when that area was a stinking mess. The lore surrounding Wahington Square Park, especially the "Hanging Tree" was fascinating. I'm still trying to figure out which tree it is! All the semi-hidden small cemetaries mentioned in Manhattan is worth a look; knowing that these still exist especially when the real estate here is so astronimical in price. I hope people make good use of this guide when showing off the City to visitors & I'm sure tourists will get a kick out of an insiders tour of NYC.

New York's 100 Best Party Places: Weddings, Special Occasion, Corporate Events
Published in Paperback by City & Co (01 February, 2000)
Authors: Hilarie Sheets and Sall Mara Stuman
Average review score:

Good Resource
Better for bigger "parties" such as weddings and corporate events (unless you have a couple thousand bucks for your birthday party) but overall a very helpful book. I learned about lots of new places I wasn't familiar with before reading this book. I would like to see this book much larger next edition (how about the 500 best places?)

New York's 50 Best Wonderful Little Hotels

I live in Manhattan and find this book indispensable
I hope they keep updating this little gem I discovered one day at a local bookseller. I was looking for a spectacular way to make my new wife's birthday special, and this handy guide provided me with ALL the answers. I live in Manhattan and find its hotels to make up an important part of its eclectic culture. Sperry has pointed me to some wonderful small (and not so small) hotels that I've walked by a dozen times and never knew existed. A real treat . . . highly recommended.

Great guide to the city!
I love this book because it reminds me that there are hundreds of hidden gems in New York. And they don't have to cost you a cent -- the point is to get yourself out the door and exploring. Thanks to the author for doing an incredible amount of legwork. The only thing I can think of as a drawback is that some of the information is bound to change over time so just make sure you call ahead to check on times and other details. Great job!

Pennsylvania Dutch Country-Getawy Guides
Published in Paperback by Stone Creek Publications (15 June, 1998)
Authors: Margaret Gates, Keith Baum, Susan Jurgelski, and John Gattuso
Average review score:

A very comprehensive guide covering Penn Dutch country
This beautifully photographed book provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the region, where to stay, where to eat and where to go and visit. This area is usually treated as an afterthought in travel guides, it was nice to see a book dedicated to the region and its people.

The information is a few years old - I believe the book was published in the late 90s - but we found it to be very accurate and reliable (in fairness, the region is not known for its rapid change.....). I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to spend a weekend, a few days, or even just take a quick trip through the area. The book takes less than two hours to read, and it is worth it just for things that you can tell your kids as you drive through!
